about

The person in charge of a ship is the Captain, but often times a ship has smaller boats on board that serve lesser needs, such as jolly boats, tenders, skiffs, and even the Captain's gig or the Admiral's barge.

Most small boats are rowed, but some even have masts that you can erect as needed (such as the one we sing about).

When you're the Sailor commanding these small craft, you're not the Captain of said small craft. There's already a Captain of the larger ship, but since there can't be more than one Captain, they have a different title for someone who commands small boats.

This song is not about watercraft.

lyrics

I am the mighty Bo'sun of a large and fearsome frigate,
And all the deck gang trembles when upon them I do visit.
But when I set sail upon the small boats of our warship,
I’m no cake eating Officer; I’m the Cox'un of the Pinnace.

Oh rum, buggery, and the lash, and when it’s time to go,
I am the man to know. I’m Cox'un of the Pinnace.

A long boat’s too much rowing, and your junk is far too dirty.
A sloop she is unstable, and no bigger than a dinghy.
A cutter’s meant for cruising, and a schooner’s slow to finish.
I prefer the speedy sailing of my fully riggéd Pinnace.

Oh rum, buggery, and the lash, and when it’s time to go,
I am the man to know. I’m Cox'un of the Pinnace.

Now some prefer a ferry what keeps to shallow water,
Or the shortness of a whaler for they fear a jib that’s longer,
But they that can handle the measure of my Pinnace,
They’ll hold tight to the line even though it makes them grimace.

Oh rum, buggery, and the lash, and when it’s time to go,
I am the man to know. I’m Cox'un of the Pinnace.

Many is a Sailor with a lass in every port,
They seek their ease and comfort of the soft and gentle sort.
But happy is the Sailor that comes along with me,
Who enjoys my full rigged Pinnace when upon the deep blue sea.

Oh rum, buggery, and the lash, and when it’s time to go,
I am the man to know. I’m Cox'un of the Pinnace.

Oh rum, buggery, and the lash, and when it’s time to go,
I am the man to know. I’m Cox'un of the Pinnace.
